As of 20th May 2018, there will be changes coming to M.O.T test works in England, Scotland and Wales. The changes will affect cars, vans, motorcycles and other light vehicles.

The first change, defects will be categorised differently and go as follows:

  • Dangerous, meaning a person/s will directly and immediately be at risk to themselves or other road users. Also known as a fail.
  • Major, meaning a person/s safety may be at risk to themselves or other road users. Also known as a fail.
  • Minor¸ meaning no significant effect on a person/s or other road users but will need repairing as soon as possible. Also known as a pass.
  • Advisory, meaning the vehicle is safe for the meantime, but will need repairing in the near future along with light monetarisation. Also known as a pass.
  • Pass, meaning the vehicle meets the minimum legal standard.

The second change, there will be strict guidelines in place for emissions coming from diesel cars with a diesel particulate filter if the vehicle has a DPF filter. The M.O.T will be able to grade this fault as a major if:

  • There is smoke of any colour coming from the exhaust.
  • There is evidence that the DPF filter has been changed from standard.

The third change, new criteria will be put in the M.O.T tests, such as:

  • Tyre pressure.
  • Brake fluid is contamination.
  • Fluid leaks posing a risk.
  • Break pad warning lights.
  • Break discs or pads missing.
  • Reversing lights.
  • Headlight washers (If car is fitted with them).
  • Day time running lights.

There is also extra minor checks that your M.O.T centre will be able to advise you about.

The forth change, the M.O.T test certificate will change and list any defects under new categories so that they are clearer for people to understand. There will also be a service coming to check previous M.O.T history and will update with each change.

The fifth change, some cars over 40 years old will not need an M.O.T, unless they have been substantially changed. Currently vehicles built before 1960 are exempt from needing an M.O.T, however the guidelines now specify that vehicles will no longer need an M.O.T from the 40th anniversary of when they were registered.
