Is the NECC plan coming to fruition?

Home / News / Is the NECC plan coming to fruition?

The NECC has taken steps to improve unemployment numbers in the North East by launching their “more and better jobs strategy”. The campaign was designed to attract more employers to the region and create jobs, thereby reducing unemployment and helping both businesses and individuals to thrive.

The strategy is starting to yield real results, with firms in East Durham planning to take on 600 new staff over the next 12 months. They are expected to add to this number in 2016 and 2017 too, helping to continue the trend of falling unemployment levels. In 2014 Country Durham saw the number of people claiming job seekers fall by over 35%.

The most impressive benefit of the campaign is it is living up to its promise to bring quality jobs. Many of the vacancies have and will come from high value added industries including the automotive and technology sectors. There is optimism that businesses can invest in the North East and get great wealth generation as a result.

One automotive manufacturer already taking advantage of this is TRW, a developer focused on designing and manufacturing both passive and active safety systems for vehicles. Their workforce has already grown to 700 in East Durham and plans are in place to see it rise further to 1,000 by 2017.

The North East and UK as a whole is attractive for the automotive industry and there is a great deal of optimism for continued job creation.
