Manufacturers are boosting employment

Home / News / Manufacturers are boosting employment

The manufacturing sector in the UK remains a major part of the economy, directly employing over 2.6 million people. It has fallen since its heyday in the 70s when it contributed 25% of the UK’s gross domestic product (GDP), but remains strong mainly thanks to the talent present in the automotive, aerospace and nuclear sectors. All three of these industries have seen significant growth recently, leading to recruitment drives.

Re-shoring of component production has helped companies in the automotive, aerospace and nuclear sectors to expand. This has led to a 23% year on year increase in manufacturing vacancies in the UK, according to figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS). Both large companies and SMEs have been taking the opportunity to recruit new staff and look to the long term.

Many firms in the manufacturing sector are taking steps to increase capacity and sustainability so they can offer the highest levels of service. Products made in the UK have a fantastic reputation and are exported to countries all around the world to be used in countless applications. This is a major reason why companies are able to recruit staff; demand means there are new opportunities for businesses to expand.

The automotive sector in the UK has performed particularly well over recent years, and is responsible for an impressive 11% of all exports. A case in point is the fact that two of the top ten selling cars in 2013, the Vauxhall Astra and Nissan Qashqai, were built here. Over 1.5 million cars were made in the UK in 2014 with an impressive 81% of them being exported.

The automotive sector is a major employer and offers a range of exciting career opportunities for people interested in all kinds of disciplines. There are over 700,000 people employed in the sector as well as 75,000 apprentices. This shows just how sought after automotive jobs are and how committed companies are to investing in talent for the future.
