A new aluminium casting facility for Telford

Metal pressing specialist Stadco became part of Cosma International, a subsidiary of global automotive supplier Magna International in 2015. When the move was made investment in the company was promised to help expand their service. New plans have been released that will see this promise come to fruition and also create around 300 new automotive jobs.

The plan from Magna is to build a brand new aluminium casting facility in Telford. The new multi-million pound factory is expected to cover 225,000 square feet. This will make it one of the largest in the region; only the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) complex will be larger in the West Midlands.

The facility will be producing cutting edge aluminium castings for JLR. It is not yet known what models the parts will be for but the technology utilised on the site to manufacture them is expected to be the most advanced in the field in the UK. This will put the company in a fantastic position.

The factory is expected to be built on the largest plot at the T54 industrial estate. This is just 12 miles from JLR’s complex so it will put the manufacture in very close proximity to its main customer. This is a fantastic example of the value of a short supply chain.

Work on the site is planned to begin in the autumn of 2016. The aim is to have the facility complete and ready to start production in 2018. When the factory is at full capacity around 295 highly skilled jobs will have been created, creating many new automotive recruitment opportunities.

The local council has worked with Magna for over two years on the project, discussing their needs, negotiating and working very hard to encourage the company to invest in the local area. They will be delighted by the news and the culmination of their efforts. The investment may encourage other businesses to look at Telford and the West Midlands too, especially if they want to enjoy strong links to the automotive industry.
