Rockingham Motor Speedway is a unique track. It can be configured 13 different ways to create tracks to suit a wide array of vehicles, from touring cars to motorcycles. The banked oval track is renowned for being the fastest in Europe. The record was set in 2001 with the 1.47 mile track being completed in an astonishing 24.719 seconds. The average speed was over 215 mph.
The track is still used for racing as well as many other purposes, including testing, corporate events and exhibitions. The site could also become home to a huge number of additional automotive jobs in the future; earlier this month, plans were unveiled that could see an employment park being constructed on the site.
The application for outline planning permission has been granted by East Northamptonshire Council. A discussion with Corby Council, the owner of part of the site, will take place in the near future. They will need to grant permission for the project to progress.
The proposal could create some exciing automotive recruitment opportunities if the development goes ahead. The project would see a 121,703 square metres of floor space created in the employment park. This could be used for vehicle production, light industrial work, and storage and distribution services. It is hoped that numerous businesses would be attracted to the site because of the excellent accessibility.
It will be interesting to see how the plans pan out, particularly with concerns having been raised about the impact on traffic in nearing areas. A lot of work will be needed to take the project to completion, but the outline planning permission is a good start.
