With recent alterations to the National Minimum Wage (NMW), it is more important than ever before for employers to be up to speed with their employment and payroll procedures, regardless of the industry they are involved in.
The adult rate of NMW has been raised by 20p per hour, which means the minimum is now £6.70 per hour for employees aged 21 and over. For 18 – 20 year olds, their pay will go up 17p to £5.30 per hour. Employers must now pay 16 – 17 year olds a minimum of £3.87 per hour, which represents an increase of 8p. Apprentice minimum wage has been raised by 57p per hour, to £3.30. These changes were introduced on the 1st of October this year, which means all employers should by now have adjusted their payroll to account for the changes. Further changes are set to be introduced next year, as a new National Living Wage (NLW) will be brought in for employees older than 25. From April 2016, employers must pay them at least £7.20 per hour.
