Over the last 5 years, an increase in poorly maintained roads have cost local councils £42 million in compensation claims.
It has been reported that 30,893 drivers and 670 cyclists submitted successful claims in the last five years, the average payout to drivers being £841 and cyclists successfully claiming and average of £10,963. Legal costs have cost councils almost £10 million.
The Department for Transport is to invest a further £100 million into the Pothole Action Fund to fix roads damaged by the recent severe weather. This cash injection will see over 2 million pot holes being fixed across the UK, however it has been said councils are facing an annual funding shortfall of over £500 million needed to roads across the UK.
