At the start of May Liberty House formally completed a £100 million deal that will see them acquire Tata Steel UK’s Speciality Steels division. The deal will protect a number of plants, including Rotherham, Stocksbridge, Brinsworth, Bolton, and Wednesbury. All 1,700 jobs will be retained and plans are in place to expand operations with £20 million of new investments. This could create around 300 additional roles in the future.
The Speciality Steels division creates high-value steels for use in the motor, aerospace, oil and gas, and industrial machinery industries. The output of materials will be increased substantially following investments in the electric arc furnaces, casting shop, and bar mill. It could ultimately exceed a million tonnes of steel per year.
The investments at the plants could stimulate the creation of further motor trade jobs across the UK. Manufacturers will continue to have easy access to high-quality steels for their vehicles. Jobs for transportation and distribution may also be created as a result.
The successful acquisition makes Liberty House one of the leading employers in the steel and engineering sectors. In total they have a 4,500 strong workforce of highly skilled, committed staff. This will rise even more with the new investments and expansion.
