2014 was a great year for the automotive sector in the UK with a record turnover of £69.5 billion, according to the latest sustainability report released by the SMMT (Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders). The turnover has grown by 6.6%, showing just how much demand there is for vehicles made in Britain. During this period, the value of exported vehicles rose by 1.8% too.
The automotive industry is cyclical, but is currently at a high point both in terms of sales and production, with 1.6 million vehicles produced in the UK over the period. This figure included the highest ever number of cars. If current trends continue the amount of vehicles manufactured is expected to reach record highs of 1.95 million within the next two years.
The report also showed the steps that have been taken to make the sector more sustainable and reduce the amount of damage that is caused to the environment. Green technologies continue to improve, and the CO2 emissions per vehicle that was produced are at the lowest ever point. Waste has fallen too, with a massive 26.3% reduction in the volume of waste going to landfill.
The performance of the sector has been recognised by the UK Government and they have set several new targets for the industry including for performance, number of exports and innovation too. As a result, it is expected that there will be more motor industry jobs created over the coming months, following on from the 27,000 that were created in 2014, a 3.5% increase on 2013. The sector now employs 799,000 people, making it one of the biggest employers in the UK.
The average worker was responsible for generating approximately £440,000 in turnover for the industry, highlighting the importance of recruiting skilled and suitable workers.
