Youth employment and the automotive industry

Home / News / Youth employment and the automotive industry

Unemployment amongst young people is high across the country. According to the IPPR, 868,000 people aged 16 to 24 are currently unemployed, showing that the unemployment rate for this group is at 17.8%. This is an issue which needs to be addressed. Many automobile manufacturers and employers are taking steps to attract young people into this burgeoning pillar of the UK economy. With jobs and apprenticeships supplied by a wide range of manufacturers and companies, there is hope that the automotive industry can help with the recruitment of young people.

Some manufacturers, such as Nissan, have specialised schemes in place to attract young people. Nissan’s Youth Evolution Scheme is designed for 16 to 18 year olds and helps them train in the industry, giving them the skills and experience required for motor trade jobs. There are three elements to the traineeship and, upon completion, the student receives recognised certificates and qualifications and the possibility of a career or an apprenticeship waiting for them. Jaguar Land Rover also recently launched an initiative called Inspiring Tomorrow’s Workforce, designed to help those aged 16 to 23 not in employment, education or training to develop skills useful in the automobile industry. Employers such as Carcraft are actively taking steps towards improving youth employment, bringing several apprentices to their sites across the country.

One thing many automobile manufacturers have in common is that many of them tend to have apprenticeship schemes available for young people, or are taking steps to provide opportunities for graduates and undergraduates, including Rolls Royce, Vauxhall, Aston Martin and Toyota, to name just a few. Many of them operate different schemes designed to help those currently in education or following education. Some also operate schemes designed to help students at A-level, as well as providing potential work experience for the right candidates.
